Current Post

Senior Lecturer in Ophthalmology at the International Medical and Technological University, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania since mid - October, 2016.

Presently, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Head - Department of Ophthalmology and Consultant Ophthalmologist at the University’s hospital. Earlier on, served as Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic Affairs (Dec 2016-Aug 2018).

Actively took part in two successful comprehensive one- week each free Eye Clinics conducted by the University in collaboration with OneSight, a USA - based charity organization.

Other Past Work Experiences

  • Lecturer and Deputy Director, Eckernforde Tanga University, Institute of Health Sciences;
  • Hospital Director, Mbeya Consultant Hospital, serving eight geo-administrative regions in South-West Tanzania;
  • Southern Highlands and Southern Zones Eye Surgeon and Eye Care Program Coordinator;

    • National Onchocerciasis (river blindness) Control Program Coordinator and Principal Investigator for a nationwide Rapid Epidemiological Survey of Onchocerciasis and its mass treatment program using Mectizan (Ivermectin), during which time another project aimed at creating a height for dose algorithm and field testing it as a surrogate for weight for dose in the communities living in difficult- to- reach geographical areas was also carried out. Both projects were funded by WHO, the World Bank, the River Blindness Foundation of Houston, Texas and the Mectizan Donation Program of Atlanta, Georgia.

  • Member of the Southern Africa Cooperation Parliamentary Forum (SADC PF);
  • Deputy Minister for Disaster Management & HIV/AIDS Control Programs in Tanzania; Member of Parliament;
  • Council Member of the National Council for Medical Research Institute; Council member of Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences

On the job courses training in clinical, surgical, research and teaching especially in microsurgery at national and international level by various foundations, inter alia, the African Eye Foundation (Atlanta, Georgia, USA), Fred Hollows (Melbourne, Australia) and Orbis International (New York, USA).
